Scott "Scooter J" Murdock was inducted into the GutterAlley Hall of Fame in its inaugural class during the Spring 2011 season.
Scoot, as he's known to the league, made his debut in the Fall 2001 season when the league was still bowling at Vivion Lanes. While not a powerhouse on the lanes, Murdock dedicated himself to become the definitive behind-the-scenes man not only for the league but also for GutterAlley.com, the league's official web site. Murdock was the very first recipient of the Underdog of the Season, People's Choice: Most Valuable Bowler as well as the Actual: Most Valuable Bowler awards when they debuted in the Spring 2003 season. He also single-handedly stopped the league's longest winning streak by rolling his 2nd highest in-league game and defeating the team on a 28-game run on his 40th birthday. Scoot has the third highest tally of titles in league history. He was a member of the Spring 2003, Fall 2004, Spring 2005, Fall 2005, Spring 2006 and Spring 2009 championship teams. He, along with Hall of Famer Ken M. Wilson and future Hall of Famer Seth Gunderson, share the distinction of having won four consecutive titles.
Quotes about Scoot from members of the league:
"With over 800 games bowled and more than 20 mvb or runner up mentions, he should be a shoe-in for the hall of fame inaugural class. Add in all the website and league work he does every week to make our league experience enjoyable and you have my reason for this vote.""This guy has been on the league from the beginning with no breaks that I can remember. His average can vary widely but don't let that fool you. Scoot has upset the hopes and dreams of many a team in his day and claimed a few championships while doing it. Not to mention this is the man who helped build and updates all the info to the website weekly and I can't think of anyone the league depends more on. For that, this mystic beast of the lanes gets my vote."
"Are you kidding me? Scoot rules."
And from the inductee himself...
1. What is your personal favorite memory from all your years in the league?
It was early in the first decade of this century when I realized that my 40th birthday would fall on a bowling league night. What I wouldn't realize for several more years, though, was that I'd be bowling against Ken on that very night.November 3, 2009. I was on a team of underdogs, and we were predicted to be swept that night. Ken's team, meanwhile, was in the process of setting records for all-time best win-loss record and longest winning streak. Their win streak was already at 26 games at the start of this match, they hadn't lost a game in more than 6 weeks.I started out with a below-average game, and we lost game 1. Ken's win streak rose to 27. My next game was above average, but we still lost. Ken's win streak climbed to 28.But then in game 3, the 40th Birthday gods smiled upon me, and bestowed me with my personal second-highest game in league history (so far), a 225. This was enough of a boost to give my team one solitary win, ending Ken's record winning streak once and for all and giving me my personal best series in the league (so far) at 546.Bowling the series of my life on my 40th birthday to end the momentum of Ken's runaway team is easily my favorite league memory.
2. What is it about this league that continued to bring you back season after season?
Definitely not my performance as a bowler. It's the people, the friendships, and the playful rivalries. Plus my love of working on the league's web site -- something that I discovered in the one season I sat out (Fall 2008) is very hard to do if I'm not also participating.
3. What does it mean for you to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?
In addition to meaning I get this cool personal tribute page on the site, it makes me happy to realize that it's not all about being a good bowler. For years I've been the money collector, which often makes me feel like a "bad guy". It's nice to know that maybe it's not seen that way after all. Because of this honor, I will work harder to ensure ScooterMath(tm) remains a beacon of accuracy in the league and at AMF Pro Bowl.
