Our short summer season came to and end tonight, with no surprises at either end of the standings but a bit of an upset in the middle. Lindsey Campbell picked up this week's high game (132) and series (339) for the women, while AJ Hofmann earned this week's high game (222) and series (528) for the men. Read on for all the rest of the details!
First up, because the matchups were backwards but since the right teams were facing each other we didn't care, on lanes 11 & 12: Team 2 went into the night with two primary goals: not getting knocked into last place by Team 4, and trying for the long-shot of moving into second place. Led by #1 Power-Ranked AJ Hofmann and his above-average 528 series, Team 2 landed a clean sweep over Team 4 and set the stage to move into second. Meanwhile, Dustin Schmeltz with his slightly-off 405 series motivated Team 4 despite his team getting swept. Team 2 climbs 1 spot in the standings to end the season 2nd place for reasons you are about to learn, while Team 4 remains in 4th.
Over on lanes 13 & 14: With closely-matched team strength, Team 1 came out guns blazing against AJ's Fault 2: The Last Temptation of James. Once Team 1 won the first game the championship was all but sealed. The second win clinched the deal. But then something strange happened. With all hope lost, some members of AJ's Fault wanted to see Team 2 move into 2nd place so began trying to throw the game. This led to members of Team 1 trying to throw the game back the other way to try to keep Team 2 in third. Ultimately, AJ's Fault sucked harder and thus Team 2 earned its second place finish. Michael Gordon with his deliberately below-average 492 series led Team 1 in a clean sweep over AJ's Fault, while #1 Head-to-Head Scott Murdock and his 478 series shone in AJ's Fault despite his team getting swept. Team 1wins the championship, while AJ's Fault sinks 1 spot to 3rd. This is the first championship for Lindsey Campbell (winning in her debut season) and the third for each of Dennis Walling, Michael Gordon, and Matthew Taylor.
Bowlers who got in just before last call at The 200 Club include: AJ Hofmann (222), James Tott (201), and Michael Gordon (216)
After a hard fought season, the Tournament of Champions was won tonight by Brandon Martinez (Division 2), with Michael Gordon (Division 1) landing in second place. Brandon will pocket the nice first-place pot, while Michael will take away the second-place pot. Congratulations!
