After a three year long hiatus, we are resurrecting the Thursday feature known as "The 11th Frame". This weekly series highlights some of the accomplishments and milestones that are often overlooked in the main weekly writeup.INDIVIDUALS:
Carl Crosses 200K | |
Carl Goetz |
Sometime around the third frame of the third game this week, Carl became the third bowler in league history to rack up 200,000 total career pins. Only the most dedicated of bowlers can get this high. In fact, out of the 347 people who have bowled in this league so far, only 13 have even crossed the 100,000 mark. While there is no one else who can reach 100,000 this season, Phil Schroeder should join Carl in the 200,000 club soon after the mid-season position round. |
Angie's Recordbreaking Return
Angie Betts |
By returning this week after a 28 season hiatus, Angie Betts shattered the record for longest gap in-between seasons. This record was previously held by Anita Osthoff, who returned in 2012 after a 23 season break. Anita will actually drop to 3rd place in this category this coming Tuesday, when Michelle Tollefson takes over 2nd place by returning from a 26 season break. |
Finger's Feelin' It | |
Andrew Finger |
With the books now closed on the Fall 2015 season, it's official that Andrew Finger debuted as the 20th best bowler in league history. Congratulations, Andrew! Now that he's anchoring a new team, let's see if he can climb even higher this season. |
Starting Big ... Ending Small?
Aaron Barber
|
Aaron's 246 in the second game this week is a bold and risky thing to do. Overshooting the first week can and has caused great bowlers to hurt their teams in the weeks that follow. But this was only the 12th highest score our league has seen in a week 1 outing. Let's take a look at how some of the others fared. In the Fall 2015 season, Kody Karnes shot a 268 for his very first game out of the gate and set an inital average of 215. Fortunately for him this was close to his natural average and his team finished in the top half of the pack with a winning record. But, as you are about to see, that's the exception, not the rule!In Spring 2014, Dennis Blake rolled a staggering 269 right out of the gate, leading to him setting an initial average about 30 pins higher than his natural average at the time. His team ended the season in 7th place with a 22.5-41.5 record, their poorest finish in of all of their 7 completed seasons. Then there was the time Duncan Ferber rolled a colossal 277 in the first week of Fall 2008 season. While this ended up having only a razor thin impact on his team's strong performance that year, had he scored just 25 fewer pins in that game his team would have ended the season in 2nd place instead of in 3rd.But the grand prize goes to Cory Chorpenning, who in Spring 2009 rolled a mind-blowing 289 in the third game of the first week. This started him with a 229 average -- a full 40 pins higher than his natural average level that season. While they still finished the season with an impressive 35-29 record, their 5th place finish that season was the only time in that team's 5-season history that they didn't finish in the top 3.So, be on notice, Aaron... history shows the deck stacked against you! Will you be delivering beer and pizza to AJ's team in the near future????? |
TEAMS:
FallopIan Eggs On the Split Sisters |
It was once taken as fact that a sweep on the first night of bowling was a rare feat and rather difficult to accomplish. And, for most of our history, this has been true. In our first 10 years -- 20 seasons -- it only happened 7 times. But then something happened that changed the dynamics of the first week -- we don't know what -- and the rareness of this event has all but disappeared. The past 5 years alone have seen 13 instances of a first night-sweep. So, sorry, FallopIan, your accomplishment is no longer as rare as it once was. And don't fret, Split Sisters, getting swept the first week is equally no longer rare. |
Long Time, Same Team |
For the 8th consecutive season, despite many changing faces, Split It & Hit It is still using the same team name. This is the longest-lived team name our league has seen. Holy Sandbaggers, Batman! holds the record for longest intact roster, this is now their 13th season with the same lineup. (It would have been 17 seasons had Freda not hurt her shoulder and missed the Fall 2009 season.) |
THE CORK BOARD:
Royals World Series Prints For Sale |
Since our league has a lot of Royals fans, here's something that might interest you. Local artist Travis Bailey, who is known for his photorealistic colored pencil drawings (and also happens to be AJ's roommate), recently sketched a print of the Sports Illustrated cover depicting the Royals World Series win. This sketch was donated to auction to benefit the HALO Foundation, a charity he donates prints to each year. He is offering additional copies of this 8x10 print at-cost ($20). If you are interested, contact AJ Hofmann either online or on any Tuesday evening. |
