Seth Gunderson was the eighth bowler inducted into the GutterAlley Hall of Fame, voted in during the Spring 2013 season. His fellow nominees were Bill Krejci, Cory Chorpenning, Demond Robinson, Jason Carpio, and Ryan Doll.
Known throughout the league for his ever-present smile and biting sense of humor, Seth made his debut in the Spring 2001 session, having rolled in 17 of our twenty seven seasons to date. With five championships under his belt – including a league record 4-consecutive titles – Seth came out on top during the Fall 2004, Spring 2005, Fall 2005, Spring 2006, and the Spring 2011 seasons. Only four other bowlers in league history have more titles than Seth, three of which are fellow Hall of Famers. Currently ranked as the 26th best bowler in league history, this gritty kid from the streets of Arkansas shows up in a number of Top 25 lists (typically in the top ten) such as Bowlers Handing Out the Most Sweeps, Most Games Won by a Bowler, Most 200+ Games, Most 600+ Series, Most MVB Runner-Ups, Most Prolific Bowler, and Most #1 Power Rankings. He's also been a big winner in the Season Favorites, having taken Captain of the Season three consecutive times as well as runner-up five more times. Doubtfully not his original intent, Seth is the sole creator of the legend of The Belt – a tool belt received during his VML days of working on the Bayer team. Anyone on his team that strikes gets to wear The Belt until the next teammate strikes. This tradition has lasted throughout the majority of the league's history, coinciding with any season in which Seth is bowling. With rare exception, his team name each season has included The Belt in it. Past examples include All Belts Are Off, I'm Gonna Belt Ya, Sucka!, Same Belt, New Notch, All Belt, No Buckle, and The Belt Strikes Back. Anyone that has ever bowled with or against Gunderson can attest to his kind, comical demeanor. Despite being a fierce competitor, he's been consistently tagged as one of the nicest people to ever have bowled in the league. Three times he's been named the runner-up for the Bob Brunker Good Sportsmanship Award due to his gentle personality.
Quotes about Seth from members of the league::
I love the man. I would marry him if he wasn’t engaged – and, of course, if I weren’t married already.Seth always makes bowling against him and his team an enjoyable evening. He is a gracious competitor.
Seth has been dominating this league for over a decade. The man deserves to go down in history for his involvement and his skill.
He has cool glasses and he bowls good and tells me how to bowl good and we have great times annoying people.
Because he is the biggest dick in league history. Or maybe it's "has", not "is", I can't remember which one he told me to put. In any case Seth is the guy who makes the league fun for everyone. Pretty much every time he is the captain of his team he either wins Captain of the Season or gets runner-up. We probably ought to just name the damn award after him. People want to bowl on his team, and for the 85% of the league who miss out, most of them look forward to rolling against him.
For almost three years (2008-2011), Seth took an extended break from the league. Tuesday nights during those seasons were simply not the same as they clearly lacked an energy that only he can bring to the lanes. While others can debate this person or that person as the heart or the soul of the league, Seth is the personification of the joy one feels when surrounded by a close friend that cannot wait to put a smile on your face...and then laugh in your face when his team defeats yours. Put this man into the Hall of Fame so that he'll have to stick around for years to come.
And from the inductee himself...
1. What is your personal favorite memory from all your years in the league?
That damn belt and all who have either worn it, scorned it, stolen it or politely asked to wear it. How silly of a thing this belt is. But how many fun times has it inspired? Perhaps the best was the actual discovery of the belt and how upset we would make other teams by yelling "theeeeeee bellllllllt" when we got a strike -- which wasn't much. Times really haven't changed.
2. What is it about this league that continued to bring you back season after season?
When I moved to Kansas City in December of 1999, I had a small handful of friends. For whatever reason, Ken (and by proxy, Scoot), took me in and made me feel welcome. I first bowled in Spring 2001, just one year after being in Kansas City. I've now bowled 17 full seasons (been a part of 18), or 9 years, during my time in KC. Tuesday nights are one of my few solaces of each week and it's awesome to see all of the friends and family I've grown accustom to. So it's not necessarily a "what" that brings me back season after season. It's a damn near necessity.
3. What does it mean for you to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?
Ken M. Wilson. Scott Murdock. Angela Bradford. Freda Schroeder, Carl Goetz, Bob Brunker, David Codding. Are you kidding me? All of those people rule. You can go to almost any other league out there and I guarantee there's no one that cares enough about their league to not only keep record of all the stats, but the historical stats, Top 25 lists, Power Bowlers, Tournament of Champions. I could go on. But for a league that cares (thanks to Ken and Scoot), being recognized as a Hall of Famer with those other names, sheesh. It's a great feeling.
It is with great pleasure that the GutterAlley Hall of Fame opens its doors to Seth Gunderson and, by proxy, The Belt.
