Hall of Famer: Freda Schroeder

Freda Schroeder was inducted into the GutterAlley Hall of Fame in its inaugural class during the Spring 2011 season.

Freda not only has the distinction of having been around since the league's inception – having bowled in nearly every single season – but is also the mother of fellow Hall of Famer Angela Bradford and future Hall of Famer Carl Goetz. Before GutterAlley.com, Freda was the league's official historian, voluntarily keeping track of everyone's scores in a spreadsheet and mailing them out on Wednesdays. So, in a way, you could also count GutterAlley.com as another of her children since her early work in the league laid the groundwork for the creation of the site you are on right now.

On the lanes, Freda has carved out quite a career. She appears in the top five of every single category for women. Currently she is 2nd place on the all-time women's high series scratch, high series handicap and high average. She was an integral part of two championship teams, winning the title in the Spring 2002 and Spring 2008 seasons. Freda is the only woman in league history to finish a season as the cumulative #1 Power Ranked bowler. She accomplished this in the Spring 2005 session of the league.

Quotes about Freda from members of the league:

"She was the league’s first statistician, keeping weekly spreadsheets with the scores and standings for those of us that craved that kind of data in the pre-web site era. She’s been responsible for bringing in dozens of bowlers when the league needed new recruits the most. She’s won titles. She’s the only woman in the league’s history to finish the season as the cumulative #1 Power Ranked bowler. And, like Carl on the men’s side, Freda sits in the top 5 for women’s high series/game both scratch and handicap. Freda deserves to be in the inaugural class."

"One of the original founders and seasoned vet."

"One of the league's founders, a top female bowler and kept track of all the stats in the days before the web site."

And from the inductee herself...

1. What is your personal favorite memory from all your years in the league?

There are so many memories from all these years; I'm not sure I have a favorite. I've always been proud when Angela, Carl and now Ian (also Phil) have good games, good series, etc. Those games when lot's of strikes are thrown are fun when anyone is able to bowl that well.

2. What is it about this league that continued to bring you back season after season?

They asked me back each year was a big reason. But mainly I loved staying in touch with VMLers, ex. and new, plus their friends and families (and my own family, too). How old would Ian have been when we started this league?

3. What does it mean for you to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?

It is awesome to be included in the Hall of Fame. It is awesome to know other bowlers, many of whom I no longer work with, have included me. I'm certainly not the best bowler but love the game and the camaraderie. It is not only a game you can compete with others but also yourself.
