A Royally Quick Night

Posted by ScooterJ On October - 27 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

With Game 1 of the World Series underway, only about half the league showed up to bowl tonight. Most of us were done before 8:00, and with one team post-bowling this will be an abbreviated writeup for now.First up, on lanes 41 & 42: 404: Team Name Not Found faced off against Stephen Hawking's Dance Club. "Leading" 404 with a 482 series, Scott Murdock was eyeing a good shot at his second 600+ series before everything came crashing down in the 9th frame of game 2. Meanwhile, Russell Bingham led the Dance Club with 578 series. With his effort, plus a tentative MVB and #Power Ranked performance by Brian Walsh, Stephen Hawking's Dance Club's clean sweep moves them up 1 spot to 2nd while Not Found drops to 5th.

Taffy Pulls Further Ahead

Posted by ScooterJ On October - 20 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

Tonight's position round reshuffled the standings deck almost as much as Ian shuffled Scoot's poker cards a few weeks ago. In the process, two veteran bowlers set new personal best records.First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Stephen Hawking's Dance Club knew they couldn't get Salt Water Taffy unstuck from first place, but they hoped to at least time a bite from their lead. But Ian Goetz had already made plans to roll his new personal best series tonight, a 709, to lead his team to a 3-1 victory and further increase their overall pull on first. Michael Gordon tried to bust some moves, but his 570 series, could only secure 1 win for the Dance Club. Salt Water Taffy remains in 1st place, while Stephen Hawking's Dance Club drops 1 spot to 3rd -- albeit technically part of a 4-way tie for 2nd..

Midterms Already?

Posted by ScooterJ On October - 13 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

It hardly seems possible, but the mid-season position round is already upon us! Tonight's games set the stage for next week, and one of our long-time bowlers reached a long-sought-after milestone. And, for the first time all season, no one was absent!First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Holy Sandbaggers, Batman! battled for position against Split It & Hit It. Split It seemed poised to work their way up the standings under the leadership of Dennis Blake and his 490 series. However Aubrey Moren would have nothing to do with it and rolled a 574 series to derail Split It's plans. The Sandbaggers climb 1 spot in the standings to 6th place, while Split It & Hit It sinks 2 spots to 5th. These two teams will face each other again next week.

Trap No Longer Trapped

Posted by ScooterJ On September - 29 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

The last night of bowling before a two-week pause saw some shifts in the standings that could lead to some unexpected matchups for the position round. On lanes 41 & 42: Hold My Beer, Watch This thought that since they were bowling the last place team, they'd continue their rise towards first place. Unfortunately for them no one warned them that It's A Trap! Despite a 632 series from Kody Karnes, the rest of the team stumbled and bumbled about in their Blue Moon drunkenness and forgot they were supposed to actually bowling. This made it easy for Andrew Finger to cast a net with his 603 series and snare 3 wins, enough to lead his team out of last place. Hold My Beer drops 1 spot in the standings to 5th place, while It's A Trap! moves up to 6th.

Hawking Gets Taffy Pulled

Posted by ScooterJ On September - 22 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

When bowling completed tonight, the men of Stephen Hawking's Dance Club went home convinced they were the first place leaders. Which should make you nervous that those math skills dispense your pharmaceuticals. ;)

Bill Krejci shows off his new future Men's High Series Scratch contender. Congratulations, Bill!

First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Split It & Hit It was tasked by the entire league with chewing some Taffy. Sadly, Dennis Blake's 590 series, was only enough for 1 win against the Taffy. Carl Goetz and his 621 series kept the Taffy crew in first place. Split It & Hit It remains in 3rd place, while Salt Water Taffy remains in 1st. It should be noted, by the way, that this is the second week in a row that all four members of Split It were present. This may be a new league record. On lanes 43 & 44: Holy Sandbaggers, Batman! faced off against Stephen Hawking's Dance Club. Phil Schroeder led the Sandbaggers with his 536 series, but wound up swept by Michael Gordon and his 560 series. Holy Sandbaggers drops 1 spot in the standings to 6th place, while Stephen Hawking's Dance Club remains in 2nd. You read that, guys? Second.

Meanwhile, Scoot shows his latest HRI (Humping Related Injury), courtesy of whichever Taffyite grabbed his arm and yanked him backwards off the lane.

On lanes 45 & 46: It's A Trap! finally got their turn to battle Ray & Stevie. Though Andrew Finger led the team with a 540 series, the Trap saw dramatic improvement among several of its members tonight. While they remain in 7th place, if they can maintain the momentum from tonight we could see some serious shifts in the standings in the weeks to come. Finally, down on lanes 47 & 48, a hypercompetitive race between 404: Team Name Not Found and Hold My Beer, Watch This resulted in games that were closer than they probably should have been. Sean Simmons led the 404 Error with a 470 series, but managed only 1 win against Hold My Beer. Kody Karnes returned to form after last week's catastrophe, holding the beer with a 683 series. 404 drops 1 spot in the standings to 5th place, while Hold My Beer jumps 2 spots to 4th.This week in Tournament of Champions, Carl Goetz led Division 1 and his now tied with his least favorite son, Ian. Division 2 sees Dennis Blake continuing to dominate. In Division 3, Sean Simmons ruled the roost and is now tied with Todd Way. In Division 4, Michael Smith climbed ahead to the lead spot.Bowlers visiting with the Pope in The 200 Club this week include: Carl Goetz (216,216), Dennis Blake (204,210), Ian Goetz (247), Kody Karnes (209,268,206), Matt O'Dell (207), Michael Gordon (213), Russell Bingham (213), and Seth Gunderson (202,202)See you next Tuesday!

Salt Water Daffy

Posted by ScooterJ On September - 15 - 20153 COMMENTS

Tonight saw a bit of a shakeup in the standings, including a surge from a team that couldn't be bothered to show up on the proper bowling night yet still thinks they get to bank their Scoot-humpings until next week. But before we get to that, on lanes 41 & 42: It's A Trap! faced off against Stephen Hawking's Dance Club. Though the predictions called for a sweep, Andrew Finger's 597 series wasn't enough for the Trap to muster more than 1 win. Meanwhile Michael Gordon turned it on with a 557 series to lead Stephen Hawking's Dance Club to 3 wins. It's A Trap! remains in 7th place, while Stephen Hawking's Dance Club moves up 1 spots to 2nd.

404: Loss Not Found

Posted by ScooterJ On September - 8 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

While it's almost certain to change in the weeks to come, fir the first time this season one team has pulled ahead of the pack to stake a claim to the first place throne.

Phil walks the runway, showing off the latest in men's bowling fashion accessories.

Starting with lanes 41 & 42: 404: Team Name Not Found faced off against Holy Sandbaggers, Batman!. Co-led by Scott Murdock and Sean Miller and their 484 series...es?, 404: Team Name Not Found secured first place with a clean sweep over Holy Sandbaggers, Batman!. Though this wasn't exactly because of stellar bowling by the 404 Error. Forgetting which week they are supposed to live up to their namesake, Holy Sandbaggers, Batman! was led by an uncharacteristic 496 series from Aubrey Moren. 404: Team Name Not Found remains in 1st place, while Holy Sandbaggers, Batman! sinks 2 spots to 6th.

Shaking It Up

Posted by ScooterJ On September - 1 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

The second week of the Fall 2015 season saw some pretty big shakeups, as every team ever moved in the standings or caused a major upset.

The league's newest member... draining itself of golden liquid almost as frequently as those drinking from it.

First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Stephen Hawking's Dance Club faced off against Ray & Stevie. Led by a freshly-back-from Vegas Michael Gordon and his 540 series, Stephen Hawking's Dance Club secured a clean sweep against the blinds. Stephen Hawking climbs 4 spots in the standings to 2nd place, while Ray & Stevie remains in 8th in perpetuity.

Sandbaggers Away!

Posted by ScooterJ On August - 25 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

The Fall 2015 season kicked off tonight, resulting in two teams on top, four teams in a dead even tie, and one team winding up a victim of it all. The blind team was, of course, a no-show. Money was collected, humps were given, beer was consumed, and even in the post-Cliff world people still can't resist adding special sketches to the score sheets. On Lanes 41 & 42, the goofily-named Salt Water Taffy faced off against the freshly-named Hold My Beer, Watch This. With a 647 series, including a 268 high game, Kody Karnes held the beer to chew on some taffy for the first two games. But right as Kody started doing his impression of the Chinese stock market with his scores, Carl Goetz and sub Bob Brunker had enough of the sticky situation and both rolled 221 games to secure game 3 and total pins for the Taffy. With their split series, The Taffy and Hold My Beer start the season off in 3rd and 4th place, respectively.Next up on lanes 43 & 44, a mostly-rookie It's A Trap! hoped to make a good show against Holy Sandbaggers, Batman! for their debut. But despite two very close games led by Andrew Finger's 590 series, they wouldn't quite keep up with Phil Schroeder's MVB performance and Aubrey Moren's 577 series. The Trap starts our trapped at the bottom of the standings, while the not-sandbagging Sandbaggers start the season in first place.Over on 45 & 46, another mostly new-team, which renamed itself to 404: Team Name Not Found after they finished rolling, faced off against a half-absent Stephen Hawkings Dance Club. With the 404 error led by Scott Murdock's 518 series and the Dance Club led by sub Jake Parrott's 522 series, the two teams ended up with a 2-2 tie. With total pins factored in, these teams wind up in 5th and 6th place, respectively. Finally, a half-present Split It & Hit It did battle against the blind team, Ray & Stevie. Dennis Blake led the half=Split with a 475 series to sweep. Split It starts the season in 2nd due to total pins. The Tournament of Champions, doesn't start for another two weeks. Because we have a blind team, each division will have one blind bowler rather than concentrating all four blinds into the same division.Bowlers kicking off The 200 Club this week include: Aaron Barber (221), Andrew Finger (200), Aubrey Moren (226), Bob Brunker (221), Carl Goetz (219,221), and Kody Karnes (268)Because of a corporate event, we will not be bowling the week of October 6. The schedule will be shifting a week to compensate, we'll update the schedule on the web site soon to reflect the change. There are two new features on the web site. First, we have an Instagram feed in the right hand column now. Tag your pictures with #GutterAlley and they'll show up in the feed. Secondly, comments on posts are working again after 2+ years of brokenness. :) Also, the poll is back, with a question about bowling fees. Check it out in thr right hand column and let us know what you think.See you next Tuesday!

Our Best Season Ever is History!

Posted by ScooterJ On May - 19 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

Well, that's it! With another 300 game, a 7-10 split, a combined league average of 168.845, and 285 200+ games, our best-season ever on MANY metrics is now in the history books!Highlights include Brian Coe picking up our league's second 300 game, and newcomer Russell Bingham picking up our first 7-10 split ever.It also came some with some sadness, when a league staple from the very beginning, Ken M. Wilson, quit after the 4th week. He was just one week shy of being the first bowler in league history to reach 100 600+ series, so maybe that dangling over his head will entice him to return someday. :) Our final week of the season included the surprise Hall of Fame induction of Ryan Doll, captain of this season's championship team Amazeballs.SEASON FAVORITESRookie of the Season: Russell Bingham (Dennis Cummings, runner-up)Seth Gunderson Captain of the Season: Ryan Doll (Seth Gunderson, runner-up)Carl Goetz Defensive Bowler of the Season: Carl Goetz (Ryan Doll, runner-up)Underdog of the Season: Alison Radke (Dan Imperial, runner-up)Emily Podhajsky Good Sportsmanship Award: Alison Radke (Angela Bradford, runner-up)Bob Brunker/Rob Kaszuba Good Sportsmanship Award: Rob Kaszuba (Bob Brunker, runner-up)People's Choice: Most Valuable Bowler: Brian Coe (Ryan Doll, runner-up)Favorite Team to Face: Sponsored By Rogue (Split It & Hit It, runner-up)Most Feared Team: Gimme Headpin / Amazeballs (Sponsored By Rogue, runner-up)Pat Searcy "Life of the Party" Award: Cliff Barendsen (Seth Gunderson, runner-up)Scott Murdock "Get 'er Done" Award: AJ Hofmann (Angela Bradford, runner-up)SEASON INDIVIDUAL AWARDS:Women's High Series Scratch - Angela Bradford (590)Women's High Game Scratch - Freda Schroeder (204)Women's High Series Handicap - Alison Radke (595)Women's High Game Handicap - No one, as there were only 3 females on the roster this seasonMen's High Series Scratch - Brian Coe (715)*Men's High Game Scratch - Kody Karnes / Aubrey Moren (278, tie)**Men's High Series Handicap - Ryan Doll (722)Men's High Game Handicap - Michael Gordon (286)*Would have been Ken M. Freda Finishes… First?

Posted by ScooterJ On May - 5 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

Since Bryan Mohr was absent again preventing a team photo of the champs, the top story this week is that for the first time anyone can remember the matchup involving Freda's team was the first to finish without a forfeit being involved --- and that was even with a forfeit happening elsewhere in the league tonight! The Fall 2015 season – our 31st since beginning back in the Winter of 1999 – came to a big finish Tuesday night. And, for the second time in a row, we set a new record for the best season in our league's 15 year-history and once again shattered the season record for the most 200+ games thrown in a single season. Like a... broken record..., we once again kicked some serious butt over these past 16 weeks. Congratulations to this season's champions: Bryan Mohr (his 2nd title), Rob Kaszuba (his 2nd), Angela Bradford (her 5th), and Ryan Doll (his 2nd). It should also be noted that this was the best season in both Rob Kaszuba's and Angela Bradford's careers in our league. While the championship was already sealed last week by the thinnest margin possible (half a game), our first two teams to face each other tonight were both powerful forces all season long. Amazeballs reached it's pinnacle in the 3rd game of the midseason position round, in which they also (like tonight) faced Sponsored By Rogue. Rogue, meanwhile, peaked just last week with an 875 series. Apparently deciding they didn't need to win any more, which was technically true, Amazeballs (led by Led by Ryan Doll's 602 series) rolled over and was swpt by Rogue, ending the season only half a game up. Carl Goetz and his 650 series led Rogue in achieving the highest possible 2nd-place finish.Gimme Headpin is a team that should have been a contender, and probably would have been if not for the sudden departure of its captain in week 5. The team soldiered on the best it could, but peaked early on with an 885 series in week 3. Meanwhile 10 Pins 10 Balls saw its greatest performance in the 3rd game of week 7, with an 863 series that included a new personal best score of 246 by Phil Schroeder. The matchup between this pair tonight ended in a draw, with Brain Coe leading Hedpin to half the wins with a 596 series and Dennis "Pops" Laube leading 10-Pins to the other half of the wins with a 538 series. Headpin remains in 3rd, while 10 Balls drops to 5th.

Artist rendering of what Lloyd Blair might look like

Squirtin' Tunas is a team that has been struggling in our league, in various forms, for quite some time... but this season they evolved into a team that should not be ignored. It is only due to luck of the draw and the sheer strength of the league this season that they didn't finish higher in the standings. Aaron Barber finished the season as the 13th best bowler of all time -- and the 8th best among those who are still active in the league. The Tuna's best series was an 829 in the 3rd game of the midseason position round. On the other end of this matchup, the league's team to finish best among the losers was Split It and Hit It. For the first time in its 6-season career, Split It operated as a 4-man team instead of a 5-man team with rotating members. They peaked last week, when a new personal best game of 192 by Michael Smith helped them achieve a 761 series. Tonight, MVB and #1 Power Ranked Bowler Michael Gordon lead the Tuna to a clean sweep with a 629 series. Meanwhile Lloyd Blair Dennis Blake led Split It with a 490 series in the losing effort. Tuna climbs to 4th place, while Split It remains in 6th.Finally, Ballz Out experienced quite a ride this season. After finishing the first half of the season with only 3.5 wins, in the second half of the season they would go on to increase that nearly fivefold with 17 second-half wins. This should be more than enough to earn them the #1 spot among the best ever second-half comebacks when the season gets closed out next week. Cliff Barendsen's personal best score of 256 rolled in week 14 helped the Ballz hit their best series with a 696. On the other side of matchup, The Pin Is Mightier proved this season that the pin was indeed mightier. Never quite ever able to fire on all cylinders until the end, they finished the season with their strongest performance, a 622 series in game 3 of week 16. Dan Imperial led the Pinis Mightier with a 473 series, while Ballz Out was so determined to return to dead last that they opted not to bowl at all tonight. Mightier regains 7th place, while Ballz Out zips up the season in 8th.  The absence of Ballz Out this evening disappointed a long time fan who stopped by specifically to see them.  This fan has vowed to return next week for Fun Week to meet them. The Tournament of Champions ended with Dennis "Pops" Laube winning the final game by 47 pins. Congratulations, Pops! You had a hell of a rookie season. Jake Parrott takes 2nd place. They join the list of winners dating all the way back into the early 2000s although we officially began awarding the winners with cash prizes in the Spring 2012 season.Bowlers helping destroy the previous league record in The 200 Club this week include: Aaron Barber (202), Brian Coe (233), Carl Goetz (205,275), Ian Goetz (210), Jonathan Vigliaturo (210), Kody Karnes (200,213), Michael Gordon (257), Russell Bingham (202), Ryan Doll (224), and Seth Gunderson (229,204)SEASON INDIVIDUAL AWARDS:Women's High Series Scratch - Angela Bradford (590)Women's High Game Scratch - Freda Schroeder (204)Women's High Series Handicap - Alison Radke (595)Women's High Game Handicap - No one, as there were only 3 females on the roster this seasonMen's High Series Scratch - Brian Coe (715)*Men's High Game Scratch - Kody Karnes / Aubrey Moren (278, tie)**Men's High Series Handicap - Ryan Doll (722)Men's High Game Handicap - Michael Gordon (286)*Would have been Ken M. 7-10!

Posted by ScooterJ On April - 28 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

Wow, what a night! By all rights, the lead story should be about Amazeballs securing the championship, making next week a formality. But their accomplishment was overshadowed when Russell Bingham, a rookie, did what no one else has done in 31 seasons of our league's existence -- he picked up a 7-10 split! This is an accomplishment that is statistically far more rare than a 300 game. For a little more perspective, 38,245 individual games had been rolled in our league before Russell became the first to do this. Congratulations, Russell, for doing what 330 of our league's bowlers have been unable to do before you!Russell's amazing pick-up took place on lanes 41 & 42, where Squirtin' Tunas faced off against 10 Pins 10 Balls. Aaron Barber led the Tuna with his 578 series, to net 3 wins against 10 Pins 10 Balls. Phil Schroeder topped the Balls with his 561 series, but it was only enough for 1 win and an eerily precise 2000 team series. Neither team moves in the standings.
On lanes 43 & 44 formerly last-place Ballz Out continued their amazing second-half recovery against Gimme Headpin. Cliff Barendsen and his 510 series led Ballz Out in splitting the series... which was enough to finally get them out of last place. This series included a crazy frame in which Cliff knocked the 10-pin into the gutter, only for it to bounce out and stand back up. Not quite as awesomely as what happened in this video, but still pretty entertaining. Meanwhile Brian Coe and his 632 series helped Gimme Headpin match the Ballz. Ballz Out climbs 1 spot in the standings to 7th place, while Gimme Headpin drops 1 spot to 3rd.

Official Sponsor of Game 1

On lanes 45 & 46: The Pin is Mightier hoped to hold on to their spot in the rankings by winning at least one game against Sponsored By Rogue. Scott Murdock and his 483 series utterly failed in that regard, getting swept by Ian Goetz and his 677 series. Sponsored By Rogue secured a clean sweep. The Pin is Mightier drops 1 spot in the standings to DEAD LAST, while Sponsored By Rogue moves up 1 spot to 2nd.

The League is Stuck!

Posted by ScooterJ On April - 21 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

For the second week in a row none of our teams moved in the standings, though one team came close to doing so. But just because none of the rankings changed doesn't mean nothing interesting happened...First up, on lanes 41 & 42: League-leaders Amazeballs faced off against Sponsored By Rogue and got a well-deserved spanking. Led by Ian Goetz and his 702 series (his second 700+!), Sponsored By Rogue secured a clean sweep but was just barely unable to make any headway in the standings. Ryan Doll led Amazeballs to defeat with his 616 series. Amazeballs remains in 1st place, while Sponsored By Rogue remains in 3rd.On lanes 43 & 44: The Pin is Mightier, whose only goal at this point is to not end in dead last, faced off against a very late and only half-present Split It & Hit It. Led respectively by Scott Murdock and his 563 series, and Dennis Blake with his 535 series, the matchup ended in a stalemate. The Pin is Mightier remains in 7th place, while Split It & Hit It remains in 6th.On lanes 45 & 46: Squirtin' Tunas faced off against Gimme Headpin. Led by Aaron Barber and his 688 series, Squirtin' Tunas secured 3 wins against Gimme Headpin. Kody Karnes, in his last in-person session this season, led Headpin with his 676 series but only secure 1 win. Squirtin' Tunas remains in 5th place, while Gimme Headpin remains in 2nd.Finally, down on lanes 47 & 48: 10 Pins 10 Balls faced off against Ballz Out. Led by Aubrey Moren and his 618 series, 10 Pins 10 Balls split the series with Ballz Out. Cliff Barendsen and his 538 series led Ballz Out in their stagnated effort. 10 Pins 10 Balls remains in 4th place, while Ballz Out remains in 8th.Tonight the league hit a major milestone. With two weeks still to be rolled, we have now officially passed the previous league record for most 200+ games in a single season, with 254 so far. The previous league record was 252, set last season. How high can we take it?

Kody won't be with us physically the remainder of the season, but his pre-bowled scores will help him be here in spirit.

Tonight was the last time this season we'll see Kody Karnes, as he will be deployed through the end of May. But don't fret, he has pre-bowled the remainder of the season. Thank you, Kody, for your service!Though tonight was technically the night that all fees for the season were due, the bowling alley will not be able to process our final deposit until next week. So those of you who were absent or otherwise unable to pay tonight can still write checks next week after all. And, as a reminder, no subs or post-bowling are allowed the remainder of the season. This week in Tournament of Champions, Ian Goetz won Division 1 to move into 2nd place. Division 2 had no true winner, Bob Brunker got the furthest but cannot place. Scott Murdock won Division 3 to retake 2nd, though his position is not secure. Finally, Alison Radke won Division 4 but cannot place.Bowlers contributing to our new all-time record in The 200 Club this week include: Aaron Barber (234,246,208), Angela Bradford (202), Aubrey Moren (226,204), Bob Brunker (200), Brian Coe (237), Carl Goetz (215,213,238), Cliff Barendsen (256), Dennis Blake (202), Ian Goetz (220,256,226), Kody Karnes (215,237,224), Michael Gordon (225), Phil Schroeder (209), Russell Bingham (235), Ryan Doll (206,213), and Scott Murdock (222)One more note, please keep former bowler and league favorite Nik Domann in your thoughts. He is having a pretty miserable time in the hospital right now and would really like to get back home to his family soon. See you next Tuesday!

Some Taxing Matchups

Posted by ScooterJ On April - 14 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

With Tax Day looming tomorrow, some bowlers probably wish they'd stay home to work on their taxes rather than suffer the beatings they took on the lanes. Before we begin, remember that all bowling fees for the season (17 weeks worth) need to be paid in full by next week. So Scoot will be IRSing all over your asses next week after Uncle Sam is done having his way with you this week.First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Ballz Out hoped to extend their recent slate of wins with some victories against Squirtin' Tunas. Led by Cliff Barendsen and his 516 series, Ballz Out started out looking like they were going to do it again after taking game 1. But Aaron Barber turned things around with his 573 series taking the rest of the series and knocking the Ballz Out of their hopes to leave last place tonight. Ballz remains in 8th place, while Squirtin' Tunas remains in 5th.

Smokin’!

Posted by ScooterJ On April - 7 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

Due to Scoot being extremely busy with work, this week's writeup will be almost entirely computer-generated. However, there's a few noteworthy items to call out...First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Sponsored By Rogue faced off against Gimme Headpin. Led by Seth Gunderson and his 685 series, Sponsored By Rogue managed only 1 win against Gimme Headpin. Led by Kody Karnes and his 706 series, Gimme Headpin secured 3 wins. Sponsored By Rogue remains in 3rd place, while Gimme Headpin remains in 2nd.  This was Seth's new personal best series, besting the 668 he rolled a little over a year ago. This also also included Kody's new personal best game, a 278.On lanes 43 & 44: Squirtin' Tunas faced off against Amazeballs. Led by Aaron Barber and his 639 series, Squirtin' Tunas split the series with Amazeballs. Led by Ryan Doll and his 582 series, Amazeballs ended in a stalemate. Squirtin' Tunas remains in 5th place, while Amazeballs remains in 1st.

Pops got his 1,000th win tonight!

On lanes 45 & 46: Split It & Hit It faced off against 10 Pins 10 Balls. Led by Dennis Blake and his 544 series, Split It & Hit It managed only 1 win against 10 Pins 10 Balls. Led by Aubrey Moren and his 580 series, 10 Pins 10 Balls secured 3 wins. Split It & Hit It remains in 6th place, while 10 Pins 10 Balls remains in 4th. A bonus tidbit from this game, Dennis "Pops" Laube got credited with his 1,000th win in our league tonight, becoming only the second bowler to reach that threshhold. On another note, I noticed I completely missed calling out Freda Schroeder for passing her 1,000th league game earlier this season. Congratulations to both of you! Finally, down on lanes 47 & 48: Ballz Out faced off against The Pin is Mightier. Led by Chadwick Andrews and his 527 series, Ballz Out secured a clean sweep over The Pin is Mightier. Led by AJ Hofmann and his 479 series, The Pin is Mightier got swept. Ballz Out remains in 8th place, while The Pin is Mightier remains in 7th. First off, what new strain is Ballz Out smoking???? Ballz Out has won 11 of their last 12 games and is poised to possibly climb out of last place next week! Furthermore, Chadwick's series included a new personal best game of 221, beating his previous record of 213 rolled during the Fall 2013 championship week. This week in Tournament of Champions, Aaron Barber won Division 1... again... and continues to extend his first place lead. Seth Gunderson won Division 2 to join a tie for second place. Freda Schroeder won Division 3 and remains in second, while Angela Bradford broke a massive tie to slip into second. Finally, Michael Smith won Division 4 to take over first place.Bowlers in The 200 Club this week include: Aaron Barber (204,241), Angela Bradford (201), Aubrey Moren (225), Chadwick Andrews (221), Cliff Barendsen (210), Dennis Laube (202), Ian Goetz (204), Kody Karnes (210,218,278), Phil Schroeder (225), Rob Kaszuba (213), Ryan Doll (225), and Seth Gunderson (244,205,236)See you next Tuesday!

Coe Golfs A Perfect 18! (Or something like that)

Posted by ScooterJ On March - 31 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

Tonight's lead story should have been all about Ballz Out tripling their win record in the past two weeks. But then something happened against the far wall. But before we get to that...First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Where has Ballz Out been all season? After suffering one of the worst starts in league history, they have enjoyed back to back weeks of victories. Cliff Barendsen, rolling his ball entirely with his exposed scrotum, whipped out a 514 series to crush the opposition 3-1. Todd Way tried to defend Split It & Hit It with his 514 series, but when you have that sac waving in your face even one win is miraculous. While Ballz Out gained substantial ground, neither team moved in the standings. On lanes 43 & 44: 10 Pins 10 Balls faced off against The Pin is Mightier. Led by an unusually inconsistent Aubrey Moren and his 586 series (including a 255 game), 10 Pins 10 Balls secured a clean sweep over The Pin is Mightier. This week's Least Valuable Bowler, Scott Murdock, "led" his team to abject defeat with his pathetic 444 series. (It's likely Dan Imperial may choose not to return from Europe when he reads this post.) 10 Pins 10 Balls climbs 1 spot in the standings to 4th place, while The Pin is Mightier remains in 7th.On lanes 45 & 46: In what was the closest thing we had to an evenly-matched matchup this evening, Sponsored By Rogue faced off against Squirtin' Tunas. Led by Carl Goetz and his 654 series and assisted by a Most Valuable Bowler performance by Jonathan Vigliaturo, Sponsored By Rogue secured 3 wins against Squirtin' Tunas. Meanwhile #1 Power-Ranked bowler Aaron Barber countered with a 663 series, to reel in 1 win for the Tuna. Sponsored By Rogue remains in 3rd place, while Squirtin' Tunas drops 1 spot to 5th.Finally, down on lanes 47 & 48: Gimme Headpin faced off against Amazeballs. Led by Brian Coe and his 715 series, Gimme Headpin secured 3 wins against Amazeballs. Led by Ryan Doll and his 572 series, Amazeballs could only secure 1 win. Gimme Headpin remains in 2nd place, while Amazeballs remains in 1st.That last paragraph was the computer-generated version of the matchup text, which is what I'm going with since video is worth a thousand words to describe what else happened...

That's right, Brian Coe became the second bowler in VML League history to roll a perfect game, following in the footsteps of David Codding. Congratulations, Brian!  (Even though you managed to not get MVB, nor #1 Power Rank, nor win your division in the Tournament of Champions... ;)   )

The 300 is not without controversy, as the league's resident pharmacist discovered performance-enhancing drugs left behind after "Gimme Headpin" departed the lanes.

This week in Tournament of Champions, Carl Goetz conquered Division 1, knocking his least-favorite begotten son out of 2nd place. Rob Kaszuba won Division 2, again, and continues to run away with it. Jonathan Vigliaturo won Division 3 to join the three-way for 2nd place, and Jake Parrott won Division 4 to knock Michael Smith out of 1st.Bowlers in The 200 Club this week include: Aaron Barber (226,227,210), Aubrey Moren (255), Brian Coe (300,213,202), Carl Goetz (246,209), Ian Goetz (212,243), Jonathan Vigliaturo (207), Kody Karnes (211,221,231), Michael Gordon (221), Ryan Doll (237), Seth Gunderson (214), and Todd Way (215)Bowlers muscling their way into The 300 Club this week include: Brian Coe (300). (Yes, now that this has a second member, it's a thing now. It's been sitting there for nearly 3 years waiting to be used!)Can those of you who still haven't paid for any of your bowling at all yet PLEASE start paying so Scoot stops getting in trouble with the front office?See you all next week!

AmazeBallz Upsets

Posted by ScooterJ On March - 24 - 2015ADD COMMENTS

While Amazeballs extended their hold on first place considerably tonight, the bigger story was that every other matchup of the night saw the underdogs commit some amazing upsets. Getting the ho-hum matchup out of the way first, on lanes 41 & 42: 10 Pins 10 Balls faced off against Amazeballs. Continuing to thumb their noses at the rest of the league, Ryan Doll and his 597 series led Amazeballs to a clean sweep. Dennis Laube tried to mount a defense with his 560 series, but couldn't muster any wins out of it. 10 Pins 10 Balls remains in 5th place, while Amazeballs remains in 1st.

With a good portion of the league drunk / hungover from today's Irish festivities, the rest of us enjoyed a fairly quick bowling session tonight. And in each of the matchups, the luck o' the Irish seemed to be concentrated in just one of the teams.First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Gimme Headpin faced off against The Pin is Mightier. With only a 2-man team present, it was Brian Coe's time to shine. His 681 series earned him MVB, #1 Power Ranked Bowler, and a clean sweep for his team. Meanwhile the PinIs Mightier enjoyed some DP (doubled performance) by Scott Murdock & Dan Imperial, who both led their team with a 460 series. The PinIs came up short, unfortunately. Gimme Headpin remains in 2nd place, while The Pin is Mightier drops 1 spot to 7th.

Bowlers On Fire!

Posted by ScooterJ On March - 10 - 20152 COMMENTS

The Spring 2015 Position Round saw almost unbearably high temperatures in the bowling alley and also saw hot action in all four matchups.UPDATE!  The mystery of the standings discrepancy has been solved.  Last week our server needed a restore from backup and this restore happened to also restore a typo that had been previously fixed.   That typo resulted in Squirtin' Tuna being credited with 1 more win than they actually had.   So yes, Seth Gunderson, it turns out they were bowling in the correct position this week.   Updates below...First up, on lanes 41 & 42: Amazeballs hoped to extend their first place lead, and with the help of Angela Bradford and her 589 series, they not only succeeded but also put themselves (just barely) beyond one-week's reach of their closest competition. The most interesting facet of this matchup, however, is that her own brother Carl Goetz rolled a 704 series (the 6th in his career) but it wasn't enough secure even a single win in a very intense battle. Sponsored By Rogue drops 2 spots to 4th place 1 spot to 3rd place, part of a three-way tie.On lanes 43 & 44: a very fishy matchup saw Squirtin' Tunas deliver such an intense onslaught that the low bowler on the team was... Aaron Barber ?!?!?. With yet another new personal best series by Michael Gordon for the second week in a row, a 643 this week, the Tuna secured three victories to climb to 2nd place but remain in 4th place due to total pins (part of a 3-way tie). Meanwhile, Aubrey Moren had to roll a new personal best game of 278 (which is also the new high score for this season) to lead 10 Pins 10 Balls to their lone win with his 641 series. 10 Pins drops 1 spot 2 spots to 5th place. On lanes 45 & 46: In the quickest matchup of the night as both teams coped with their anchors awayGimme Headpin finally saw signs of life with the return of as full a roster as they're going to get the rest of this season. Brian Coe's 618 series was more than enough to get a clean sweep against Split It & Hit It (led by Todd Way's 407 series). Headpin climbs 1 spot to 3rd place 3 spots to 2nd place (the total pins leader in a 3-way tie), while Split It drops a spot to 7th.

Suspected of inflencing the pin-falls of at least one strike

Finally, down on lanes 47 & 48: The primary goal of Ballz Out was to increase their win percentage out of the hundredths spot, and that they did. Led by Cliff Barendsen's 515 series, and assisted greatly by continental drift and the gravitational perturbations of a distant passing asteroid, they were able to secure one win and make game 3 close enough to be exciting. Sadly, for the Ballz, Scott Murdock of The Pin is Mightier remembered a few basic fundamentals after a recent slump and rolled a 532 series to lead his team to 3 wins. Ballz Out remains in 8th place but at least now has a win percentage that doesn't begin with a leading zero, while The PinIs rises 1 spot to 6th place. On a sad note, Ken M. Wilson has had to withdraw from the league for the remainder of the season. His team will be carrying his average each week, and whomever faces him in the Tournament of Champions each week needs to roll 1 pin over average to advance. This week in Tournament of Champions, Carl Goetz gained ground by winning Division 1 but Aaron Barber continues to rule the roost. Michael Gordon won Division 2 to pull into 2nd place behind Rob Kaszuba. Division 3 started with AJ Hofmann cursing Angela Bradford and ended with Scott Murdock doing the same as she won the division to move into a tie for 2nd, while Scoot barely squeaked by into 1st. Finally, Bryan Mohr dominated Division 4 to extend his 2nd place position and start threatening division leader Jake Parrott.Bowlers jockeying to replace Ken in the The 200 Club this week include: Angela Bradford (222), Aubrey Moren (278), Brian Coe (235), Bryan Mohr (201), Carl Goetz (235,213,256), Cliff Barendsen (210), Ian Goetz (200,231), Kody Karnes (224), Michael Gordon (218,255), Russell Bingham (216,203), and Ryan Doll (235)See you next Tuesday!

  FROM THE GUTTER (GUTTER QUOTE)
"Fire when Gordon's in range!"

General Kala, irritated that neither the gas chamber, swamp monsters, the destruction of Prince Vultan's kingdom, War Rocket Ajax, nor the Lightning Field seem to be able to stop Michael Gordon these days.
