The 11th Frame – Week 7, Spring 2013

Posted by Ken March 14, 2013 Spring 2013

The seventh installment of "The 11th Frame" features some interesting nuggets from our Top 25s collection, covering the accolades (and disappointments) of our current and not so-current league rollers. As mentioned already in this week's write-up – the league standings have tightened up significantly in preparation for the position round, Dennis Blake was the week's MVB, and Carl Goetz tries to keep his team in contention with a #1 Power Ranked bowling performance. Wondering what else happened that you probably didn't know about? Check this out:INDIVIDUALS:

Carl says "King me!"

Carl Goetz
Earlier in the season, Carl fell from the top spot on several heavy hitting Top 25 lists. Tuesday night, he regained them. With his 668 series – made up of three 200+ games – and a #1 Power Ranked bowler performance to boot, Goetz is now ranked #1 in the league when it comes to Bowlers with the Most 200+ Games as well as Most #1 Power Rankings. At this pace, he'll be back on top on this list in no time.
1...2...3...4...5...and done.

Ryan Doll
Rolling a 200+ game is almost always satisfying (unless your game ends up being 299). Following it with another 200+ game is even better. Keep on going, though, and you'll find yourself on the Top 25 Bowlers with the Most Consecutive 200+ Games. At this point, it only takes four in a row to get onto the list. Ryan Doll came into Tuesday night with four and threw a 203 to start off his night. Splits in Game #2 conspired, however, to keep him from moving up any further and ended his run at 24th on the list. One more 200+ and he would had leapt up to 14th.
Bobby targets Bill

Bob Brunker
With his new bowling ball, everyone's favorite good sportsman Bob Brunker is starting to show signs that he's figuring it out. With his best series showing since the Spring 2010 session (week 7 saw him hoist a 622), Bobby led his team to three wins Tuesday night. These wins put him on the edge of cracking into the top ten on the Top 25 Most Games Won by a Bowler list. Having passed Janelle (Laube) Lamar for the 11th spot, he's now trailing #10 Bill Krejci by a margin of 2.5 games. Watch your back, Bill.

TEAMS:

Tightest Position Round Ever
With the mid-point of the league coming at us next Tuesday, it's pretty hard to ignore that the league standings are very tight. Currently there are only two games separating the top five teams in the league. Will Strike if Provoked has 18 wins; Dragon Balls has 17; Murder, He Wrote sits at 16.5; Snakes on a Lane and Three Strikes and You're Out! each have 16 wins apiece. We looked back and, yes, this is the tightest position round in league history. The second closest – the Spring 2009 session – had three games separating the top five teams.
Close calls
This week, we saw every single game in the matchup between Murder, He Wrote and Brunk Enough to Dowl settled by the slimmest of margins. They tied Game #1, settled Game #2 by four pins, Game #3 by ten, and even total pins by six. Was this the closest matchup of all time, though? Surprisingly, no. It ranks third. Two other matchups were settled by even slimmer margins. Talk about your close calls.

ODDITIES & STRAIGHT UP NUMBERS:

Don't do it, Seth!!!
Last season, Ken bested his own record for futility by rolling 15 consecutive games below his average. Think about what it takes to do that – each week, you are not only missing your average game after game, you are lowering your average as well. Lather, rinse, repeat...on a lower and lower scale. Wilson thought, for sure, that this particular "feat" would stand unchallenged for quite some time seeing as his original streak of 14 games had stood since the Fall '07 session. Sadly, this is not the case. Seth Gunderson, who has been on a slow decline all season, is on the verge of breaking it. Reached for comment, Seth said: "I'm taking the record!" Don't do it, Seth!!!
