The 11th Frame: Week 1, Spring 2013

Posted by Ken January 28, 2013 Spring 2013

With the start of a new season, we here at GutterAlley.com decided to create a new feature on the site to showcase something we've never really done in the past – highlighting various milestones that bowlers in our league have accomplished throughout their individual careers as compared to the rest of the league throughout its long history. Sure, we've done a slew of Top 25s but we thought it would be cool to call these events out as they happen. So, with that, sit back and (hopefully) enjoy our first edition of The 11th Frame. Special thanks goes out to Jonathan Vigliaturo for the naming idea!As you probably saw in this week's write-up, we had quite a few impressive performances thrown but what else happened that you probably didn't know about? Check this out...INDIVIDUALS:

Kody off and running towards Rookie of the Season

Kody Karnes
Kody Karnes was one of the last people to sign up to roll this season but he certainly didn't waste any time moving up towards the front of the pack. With his initial three games now under his belt, Kody's 166 average landed him in 13th place on the Top 25 Best League Debuts list covering GutterAlley's history. Welcome to the league, soldier.
Phil moves up the MVB charts

Phil Schroeder
Phil Schroeder was this week's MVB, the 10th in his career, which inches him into a tie with Dennis "Pops" Laube for 2nd place on the Most Valuable Bowler nods in league history behind Jason Carpio. Data we recently unearthed from an old drive contained scores and schedules for the Spring and Fall 2002 seasons. With these additions we have a new batch of MVBs that were credited throughout people's careers. Carpio, Pops, and now Phil rule the top two spots.
Ian's huge opening week

Ian Goetz
It's no surprise that Ian Goetz shot lights out Tuesday night. He's done this before. But to have almost toppled the all time best personal start in league history? We didn't realize that. Ken M. Wilson (3rd), Ryan Doll (9th), Aubrey Moren (18th), and Cliff Barendsen (25th) also made the list. Cory Chorpenning still leads with his 689 series his first week in the Spring 2009 session. Not a bad start, eh?

TEAMS:

Snakes on a Lanes' stellar series
With rare exception – and given enough time – almost any league record of ours can fall. One such record was bested by a single pin Tuesday night as Snakes on a Lane rolled the all-time best team series (4-per) in league history with their 2,490. The previous record of 2,489 has stood since Week 6 of the Fall 2008 season. The Snakes also rolled the 2nd and 7th highest team games (4-per) in GutterAlley history on opening night.
Talk about your high handicap!
In the hundreds of matchups the league has seen over the years, only two other teams have rolled receiving more handicap than Split It and Hit It had Tuesday night. Getting 278 pins per game, the men used it to their advantage to come away with a 31-pin victory over the Snakes on a Lane in Game #2.

ODDITIES & STRAIGHT UP NUMBERS:

Best lanes in league history come through again
Throughout our 27 seasons, only a handful have not taken place inside the North Kansas City Pro Bowl. Recently, Scoot ran a query throughout the league's history and discovered that we've rolled on every pair of lanes with the exception of 5-10 and 33-40. Because we've not rolled on 25 pairs of lanes (our house only has 24 pair), we decided to go with the Top 10 (and the rest!) Good Luck Lanes in league history. Coincidentally, the only team to sweep Tuesday night (Will Strike if Provoked) rolled on...what else...lanes 43-44, the top good luck lanes in league history.

Damn you, Chorpenning, and your team’s 921 game. It *will* fall eventually…but we’re gonna need your help. :)

  2. avatar Parre says:

Nah, not gonna happen. And that “Ain’t Know Sh!t”.
